Job Title: Senior Associate (Scientific/Clinical)

Job Description:

Senior Associates/Associates will work on potential investments, acquisitions, analysis of potential exit opportunities, and the monitoring of current portfolio companies in the Life Sciences sector. Senior Associates/Associates are involved in transaction due diligence, valuation analysis, and negotiation of contracts and other agreements. The relatively small size of this group offers Senior Associates/Associates the opportunity to work closely with senior members of Blackstone and to have extensive interaction with management teams and external advisors. Our investment process in Blackstone Life Sciences (“BXLS”) combines life sciences product assessment and forecasting with the strategic thinking and financial analysis of private equity investing. This role offers the opportunity to evaluate, analyze and engage in direct life sciences investment opportunities across the globe.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with the BXLS team to source and drive scientific and clinical due diligence on prospective life sciences product investments, ensuring quality, consistency and thoroughness in approach by the following:
    • Assess medical unmet need addressed by an innovation
    • Gap analysis of primary and secondary scientific / clinical literature within a given field
    • Critical assessment of research methods and primary data supporting an investment prosect across basic, translational, and clinical science realms
    • Review regulatory correspondences to identify product approval risks
    • Conduct research interviews with key opinion leaders
    • Attend and summarize scientific meetings and congresses in relevant areas
    • Conduct industry and competitive analysis
    • Build proficiency in business and financial elements of life sciences investments
    • Ensure proper fit between deal structure and key R&D risks of an opportunity
  • Draft and deliver investment memoranda for presentation to the BXLS Investment Committee
  • Assistance in the execution and financing of transactions
  • Support the BXLS senior investment professionals as required

Qualifications:                                   

Blackstone seeks to hire individuals who are highly motivated and have demonstrated excellence in prior endeavors.  In addition to strong analytical and quantitative reasoning skills, the successful candidate should have:

  • Superior written and oral communication skills, including a demonstrated ability to author memoranda and group presentation materials
  • Advanced degree in a life sciences discipline (i.e. MD, PhD, or MD/PhD)
  • Demonstrated track record of original scientific or clinical inquiry rooted in mechanistic basis of disease
  • Strong intellectual curiosity and desire to work across disciplinary boundaries
  • Post-graduate clinical training, post-doctoral research training, and / or work experience in biopharma/biotech with deep R&D exposures or related investment fields a strong positive
  • A desire to work in a life sciences team environment with colleagues of varied backgrounds in business, finance, and commercial
  • An ability to manage ad hoc projects independently and to completion
