The Opportunity:
Venrock is seeking an Investment Professional to join the Global Nexus team. This individual will work closely with colleagues in both China and the US to identify, evaluate, and support investments in innovative biotech companies.
The ideal candidate combines strong scientific or clinical training with experience in investing, banking, consulting or similar roles. We are looking for an intellectually curious, highly motivated team player who demonstrates sound judgment, integrity, and a strong work ethic. Key Responsibilities
• Perform scientific, clinical, commercial, competitive, and financial due diligence on biotech investment opportunities
• Assess therapeutic mechanisms, clinical data, development plans, regulatory strategies, intellectual property, market potential, and competitive positioning.
• Attend investment and scientific conferences
• Build financial models, valuation analyses, market forecasts, and investment return scenarios.
• Prepare investment memoranda, presentations, and recommendations for internal discussion and investment committee review.
• Conduct primary research, including interviews with physicians, scientists, industry executives, customers, and other subject-matter experts.
• Develop relationships with entrepreneurs, academic institutions, industry executives, investors, and other members of the biotech ecosystem.
Collaborate closely with Venrock team members in Shanghai and the US, including across time zones when necessary.
Qualifications
• PhD or MD in a relevant scientific, medical, or technical discipline required.
• Willingness and ability to live and/or relocate to Shanghai full-time.
• At least 2 years of professional experience in investment banking, equity research, private or public investment firm, management consulting, or a closely related field
• Strong understanding of biotechnology, drug development, clinical research, and the broader healthcare industry
• Demonstrated ability to analyze scientific and clinical information and translate it into clear commercial and investment insights.
• Professional fluency in both Mandarin Chinese and English, including the ability to participate effectively in investment and scientific discussions in both languages.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail, intellectual curiosity, and ability to manage multiple workstreams in a fast-paced environment.
• High standards of integrity, professionalism, accountability, and work ethic.
• Collaborative approach and demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a cross-border team.
Compensation:
Base and bonus will be competitive with industry standards. Compensation will be determined based on several factors including, but not limited to, skill set, years of experience. Employees in this role are possibly entitled to additional compensation such as carried interest.
