ABOUT PORTAL INNOVATIONS

Portal Innovations is a venture development engine focused on early stage life science enterprises. Launched in Chicago in 2020, we deliver a crafted mix of management expertise, funding, and fully-equipped lab space to turn biotech breakthroughs into businesses. We are strategically expanding our team as we prepare to open our second Chicago location in Q2, 2022 and look to grow our footprint across the Central U.S.

OVERVIEW

Portal Innovations is seeking an insatiably curious, early-career Analyst to support our Venture Operations team in sourcing and developing the next generation of biotech breakthroughs. This is a unique role that requires a person with an equally unique blend of interests and capabilities, spanning the worlds of biotechnology and finance/economics. The ideal candidate:

  • Is proficient in both the life sciences and finance/economics, especially:

    • Modern biology and chemistry

    • The drug development process

    • Financial modelling

    • Venture economics

  • Knows how to quickly and independently come up to speed on complex scientific concepts and then communicate them with clarity and concision.

  • Enjoys working in an ambiguous environment and creating order out of complexity.

As an analyst, you can expect to be challenged, developed, and exposed to some of the most exciting technologies in the world, at their earliest stages. Portal utilizes an apprenticeship model where Analysts learn-by-doing and quickly develop expertise by working closely with more senior team members. Similar to a medical residency, we follow a “see one, do one, teach one” approach to teaching the foundational skills required to successfully evaluate, launch, and invest in companies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Director for Venture Operations and Director of Scientific Operations in conducting due diligence on potential investment opportunities in early-stage life sciences companies.

  • Prepare in depth research briefs, reports, and white papers around:

    • Specific companies and investors
    • A variety of diseases and therapeutic areas
    • Broad trends in the life science and bioengineering markets
  • Support Portal’s leadership in building relationships with ecosystem partners, including top-tier research universities, startups, and venture capital firms.
  • Lead firmwide efforts to capture and codify the team’s knowledge and relationships in Portal’s Knowledge Management System

  • Support Portal’s portfolio companies on a variety of strategic and tactical projects

  • Limited travel to partner universities will be required

 
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
  • A Master's Degree in a life science related field is required. PhD degree preferred.

  • Training in finance or economics is strongly desired.

  • 1 to 5 years experience working in biotech, finance, or management consulting

  • Solid understanding of life science concepts, including but not limited to chemistry and biology fundamentals, the drug development process, and the US healthcare landscape

  • Solid understanding of the fundamentals of finance, capital markets, and venture

    economics

  • Mastery of the written word to communicate complicated scientific ideas, simply

  • Experience conducting due diligence on startups or equities is a plus

  • Ability to plan, organize and prioritize assignments, to meet deadlines, and manage multiple assignments simultaneously

  • Strong interpersonal, analytical communication skills and ability to both work as part of a team and independently
